The answer is neither. It is a tiny PCB embedded in a D-subminiature housing. Why? As part of a battery management program at Philips/Respironics Inc., four Ni-Cad battery packs needed to be connected (specific series/parallel) to a single battery charger to increase throughput. Placing a PCB inside a D-subminiature housing solved the following: 1. Streamlined ‘IN-LINE’ packaging enabled locating multiple battery chargers. 2. Ergonomic means to use the housing as a handle for connect/disconnect of the battery packs.
